Family portraits in Canberra’s winter

Somehow we’ve slipped from the magic and colours of Autumn towards Winter. Despite the cooler temperatures, it’s still a fantastic time to consider booking a family portrait session in the nation’s capital.

Why? In short, the light!

The light seems softer and creates a beautiful glow, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon. It’s brilliant for portraits.

And for families, the shorter days mean you can still get those fabulous ‘golden hour’ photos and have the kids back home in time for dinner and bed!

Family portraits during Canberra’s four seasons

Canberra is synonymous with four seasons. Having lived in a few different cities throughout my life, it’s one of the real benefits of living in this climate.

Think of the spectacular colours of Floriade and the Tulip Top Gardens in Spring.

The beautiful summers around Lake Burley Griffin.

Splashes of brilliant colour throughout the city and suburbs with stunning Autumn trees.

The snow-lined Brindabellas and Corin Forest in Winter.

There’s absolutely no reason not to celebrate all of Canberra’s seasons all year round. Dressing up in coats, beanies, and scarves for photo sessions on the chilly days is a great way to embrace the seasonal experience that is Canberra.

Location, location, location!

Canberra boasts so many brilliant locations for winter photo sessions!

One of my favourites is the National Arboretum, just a few kilometres from the Canberra city centre. There are plenty of options here. The stunning green lawns below the visitor centre and the Margaret Whitlam Pavillion are great for relaxing against a sea of green grass. The beautiful Himalayan Cedar forest provides opportunities to hide and seek among the tall tree trunks. The beautiful silver birch trunks also make a stunning backdrop for a fashion or family session.

The parklands around Lake Burley Griffin are perfect for winter photo shoots. Lennox Gardens is always popular, as is Commonwealth Park and Regatta Point with its beautiful trees and gardens. The Parliamentary precinct around Parkes Place, with its established trees and green lawns, also gives kids a chance to run around and play.

Family portraits – consider something different!

Urban street art offers plenty of pop to images for those wanting something a bit different. Thanks to the Surface Urban Art Festival in early March 2022, talented artists have transformed the city centre and Braddon into a kaleidoscope of colour. Colourful murals can be found almost everywhere – in laneways, roadways and on the sides of buildings. These artworks create a sense of fun and, with the right outfits, you can have a lot of fun!

If you’re looking for shots of kids playing in the snow, without travelling all the way down to the ski resorts in the Snowys, then Corin Forest is the go! It’s around 30 minutes out of Canberra, but it’s a beautiful drive. It’s a great excuse to rug up with jackets, hats and gloves, and who doesn’t love a snowball fight, right?

So don’t let the chilly temperatures put you off! Get in touch to plan a family portrait session and make the most of the seasons in Canberra!
