Some of my clients have recently had questions about photography contracts. Here, I unpack why your contract is important and what’s covered in my agreements.
Why do I need a photography contract for a photo session?
If you are a fan of ‘no surprises’ then having a photography contract is a crucial part of a photographic portrait session.
A photography contract sets out the terms and conditions of working together. It explains what I’ll do as the photographer and what you need to do as my client. It protects both my rights, and yours. It gives you certainty on what you can expect before, during, and after our session.
It also outlines any additional costs and when these may apply.
I use photography contracts for all my sessions – including portrait and family sessions, mini-sessions, weddings, and personal branding sessions – because every client is important.
What’s in a photography contract?
Different photographers may include different things, and different events may have different terms and conditions. Here are a few common essentials that you’ll find in my photography contracts:
- Payments – including when booking your session, when any balance/s are due, any additional charges (such as for extra edits), and when refunds may apply.
- Copyright explanations and consent – this clarifies ownership, how you may use the photos from your session, and how I’ll use the photos. I’ll also ask you to confirm if you are comfortable with me using the images to market my business. This includes using images from your session in social media. If you would prefer I don’t use the photos in this way, or not use particular photos (for example, of children), please confirm this in writing.
- Expectations – what I expect from you when you book a session with me, and what you can expect from me as your photographer. This includes before, during, and after your session.
Do I need a photography contract?
The short answer is yes! A photography contract helps ensure everyone is on the same page, right from the start. Quite simply, if you haven’t signed your photography contract your session won’t go ahead.
It’s important not to skip to the end to sign your photography contract. You need to read and understand what’s in there. This means if you are running late for your session or you want extra edits, you’ll understand what’s required, or if additional costs may apply.
Still have questions?
All my sessions include a phone consultation as part of your booking fee. Please use this time to ask me any questions you may have about your photography contract or the process. I’m more than happy to explain anything you are not sure about. I want you to feel well-informed and comfortable ahead of your session.
Ultimately, I want you to enjoy your portrait experience with me, and a signed photography contract can help prevent misunderstandings and assumptions. I’m here to help you, so if you have any questions about your photography contract, please reach out.
