Top 5 tips for preparing for your family photo session

Here’s my top tips for getting the most out of your session and creating beautiful wall-worthy images!

  1. Coordinate outfits with the season – While what you wear is absolutely up to you, I’d suggest considering warmer or neutral tones like rust, olive green or beige. These colours complement the natural backdrop without overpowering the scene. Alternatively, add a contrasting colour for extra pop, like purple or blue. Wearing layers like light coats, scarves and cardigans not only keep you warm but can add texture and interest to your photos.
  2. Timing is everything! – Schedule your session for late afternoon or early evening. The light softens in Autumn and is at its best in the early morning or late afternoon. Plan your session when the golden hour light bathes everything in a magical glow and enhances those rich seasonal colours! There’s nothing like it!
  3. Add some fun activities – think throwing fallen leaves, tickling the kids and laughing, or sitting on a blanket and admiring the vibrant colours. These candid activities help to bring life and fun to your images.
  4. Plan ahead for comfort – some Canberra Autumn days can be a bit chilly (after all, it’s what gives us those gorgeous leaves). Please make sure your family dresses for the weather. If you or the kids are cold, trust me, that tends to show on camera. I’d much rather you were warm and comfortable!
  5. Trust your photographer – my job is to get the best out of your and your family during our time together. As part of this, I’ll guide you through a range of activities and posing suggestions during your session. Your job is to have fun so your personalities shine through for beautiful, authentic family photos. My easy-going approach to sessions has helped make me one of the best family photographers in Canberra, according to BabyInfo.
